Pioneering Water Solutions: Meet Eng. Daniel Ng’ang’a of Murang’a Water & Sanitation Co. LTD.

 In the vibrant landscape of Kenya's water management sector, Eng. Daniel Ng’ang’a stands as a beacon of innovation and dedication. As the Managing Director of Murang’a Water & Sanitation Company Limited (MUWASCO), he is set to represent his utility at the IWA World Water Congress in Toronto, Canada, from August 11-15, 2024. His participation, as part of the joint IWA and NewIBNET Initiative for Data Pioneers, underscores his commitment to advancing global water and sanitation solutions through benchmarking and collaboration. 

  

Murang’a Water & Sanitation Co. LTD: A Glimpse 

Established under the Companies Act Cap 486 (Revised 2015) of Kenya and operating under a license from the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB), MUWASCO is tasked with delivering essential water and sanitation services to Murang’a Municipality and its surrounding areas. Covering approximately 350 km², the company operates three water treatment plants—Kiawambeu, Kayahwe, and Gakoigo—with a combined daily production capacity of 23,000 m³. Additionally, the Karie wastewater treatment plant handles 3,000 m³ per day. Serving a population of around 120,000, MUWASCO boasts 19,000 active water connections and 6,500 sewerage connections, achieving a commendable 73% coverage in its service area.

The Man Behind the Mission: Eng. Daniel Ng’ang’a 

Eng. Daniel Ng’ang’a’s career spans over fifteen years in the design, development, and management of water and sanitation utilities across Kenya’s major towns. Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), he is registered by the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and is an active corporate member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK). His academic credentials are further bolstered by a Masters in Public Policy and Administration (MPPA), an MBA, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Community Development from ABMA (UK). 

  

Leadership and Governance  

Under Eng. Ng’ang’a’s leadership, MUWASCO has thrived, upholding its mission of providing top-notch water and sanitation services. The company’s robust governance structure includes an eleven-member Board of Directors and a dedicated team of 165 permanent staff across three main departments: Technical Services, Commercial Services, and Human Resources & Administration. This structure ensures efficient operations and the delivery of high-quality services to the community. 

  

A Role Model for Future Leaders 

Eng. Ng’ang’a’s role as the emeritus Chairman of The Water Service Providers Association of Kenya (WASPA) and his chairmanship at Molo Technical and Vocational College reflect his deep-rooted commitment to the water sector and capacity building. His participation in the IWA World Water Congress is a testament to the potential of Kenyan water utilities on the global stage.
